Lesson for the day : Do not compose in the posting area for this log as your session times out and you have to retype everything. Let's try this again.

So, three years ago I start work at a small ISP who offers service via cable TV lines. Seems promising. Demand is big, morale is high, Internet is the ‘new big thing’. Oh, and I also got married.

It was quite a juggling act: new marriage, but being on call 24/7, working late hours, canceling plans due to emergency meetings, the whole bit. But it paid well and the future looked promising. Sabrina (who I also refer to as The Wife) was very supportive throughout, of course, but I know that some days she wanted to smash my laptop on the concrete and then jump up and down on the bits.

Then the dot-com industry self-destructs. Everyone is going out of business. But,hey! We got four million customers! We’ll make it through!

Guess again. If you are reading this, then most likely you have heard me rant at length about why the company went down the tubes. I am not going to go over it again, it only gives me heartburn. Suffice it to say that some bad decisions were made and the company is closing its’ doors.

Suddenly, I am out of a job. Middle of December they tell me that Feburary 28th is my last day, if not sooner. I just read a quote – “When you lose your job, the unemployment rate is 100%”. Ain’t it the truth. We had to move fast, as a 1500$ a month rent cannot be ignored when you suddenly are going to lose your way to pay for it. We are going to have to move out, no two ways about it.

At that point we consider our options. Move in with friends or family while I job hunt? Ugh, severely limit our freedom while mooching for who knows how long, not fun. How about moving out of the area? I had an offer in Atlanta! Double ugh, too hot and mosquitoes the size of ravens. After throwing out several ideas, one of us throws out the idea of actually fulfilling our dream of moving to Ireland for a little while. This seemed to be the only option to make this painful experience have something good come out of it.

After researching the plan to make sure it was feasible, we decided to pack up shop and go for it. Some may think it brave, some may think it stupid. Only time will tell.

Hence this log. I knew we were going to have trouble keeping everyone up to date on our adventures, so I do what comes naturally : I ask my “computer friends” for a technical solution. A few hours later and here we are (Thanks L.W.!)

Truth be told, I don’t know anything about computers, I just surround myself with people that do. I can’t even type, I have this monkey here who dictates everything for me.

Ok, you got me. I am a geek at heart and dream electric sheep. Sue me.

Expect to see posts from myself and Sabrina as time goes on and the wackiness ensues. I will TRY to be regular, but you know how it is. If you get impatient, send an email, or call, or come VISIT for cryin’ out loud.

I’ll buy you a Guinness and it’ll be fun, I promise.
